Cutting Edge Cooling for a World Class Club

Chiller Solutions for Chelsea FC

JSA Service was contracted to undertake the replacement of two 310 kW air-cooled chillers serving the First Team Building at Chelsea FC’s Cobham Training Ground. This project encompassed the removal of the existing chillers and the installation of new Carrier air-cooled scroll chillers. The proposal aimed to provide a like for like replacement while considering the spatial constraints of existing installation.

The project required careful consideration of the limited space available for the chiller units as the replacement chillers needed to match or exceed the cooling duty of the existing units to maintain environmental control within the building without exceeding the space allocated. Integrating these chillers with the existing chilled water system and electrical infrastructure required precise mechanical and electrical works, whilst the safe recovery and disposal of refrigerant from the old chillers (R407c) was essential in adhering to environmental regulations.

JSA Service selected the Carrier air-cooled scroll chillers as a suitable replacement as they offer comparable cooling capacity and similar physical dimensions to what was already in place. In order to make the replacement, new mild steel pipework was installed, including valves and fittings; Thermal insulation with foil facing and stucco aluminium cladding was then applied to the new pipework. After the pipework had been fitted, electrical works could take place, these involved the disconnection and reconnection of power supplies to the chillers, utilising existing sub-main cables and switchgear where it was needed. The project team undertook commissioning of the new chillers, including an introduction to the chillers controls and functions to the team at Chelsea FC.

The project successfully replaced the existing chillers with new, more efficient carrier chillers, which were effectively integrated with the existing systems.

The chiller replacement at Chelsea FC’s training facility was a multifaced undertaking that JSA Service successfully executed. By addressing the challenged of spatial constraints, cooling duty requirements, logistical complexities, and systems integration with a comprehensive and well-planned approach, JSA Service demonstrated its expertise in delivery HVAC solutions. The project ensured the seamless replacement of critical cooling infrastructure, contributing to the continued operation of the facility.
